One of the sacred Hindu shrines and one of the prominent Char Dham pilgrimage sites, Yamunotri Temple is located at an altitude of 3,293 meters (10,804 ft) in the Garhwal Himalayas in the Uttarkashi District of Uttarakhand, India. The holy pilgrimage site of Yamunotri, the origin of the river Yamuna, is the westernmost pilgrimage center of the Garhwal Himalayas, located on a ridge of the Bandarpoonch Mountains. As we have mentioned earlier the “Yamunotri Temple” is one of the sacred Char Dham Pilgrimage sites in Uttarakhand visited by millions of devotees annually. It is dedicated to Goddess Yamuna, the river deity. According to Hindu Mythology, It is believed that taking a dip in the Yamuna River protects one from untimely death. Devotees either walk or ride a palanquin or pony to reach the temple from Janki Chatti (about 3,233 m above sea level), which is a steep climb of about 3 km that takes about 3 hours.

This temple is surrounded by the sacred Yamuna River and natural hot springs, including Surya Kund and Gouri Kund. The temple daily opens at 06:00 AM and closes at 08:00 PM. The temple is only open from May to October, because of the weather conditions. This year, the Yamunotri Temple is expected to open on April 30, 2025 (Akshaya Tritiya), marking the commencement of the Char Dham Yatra.
