Gangotri Temple also known as the ‘Gangotri Dham’ is one of the prominent Hindu shrines, located in the small town of Gangotri in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand, India. It is one of the sacred places and one of the Char Dham pilgrimage sites. Gangotri is one of the sources of the holy river Ganga and it is believed that river Bhagirathi originates from ‘Gaumukh’.

The main origin of the river is Gaumukh which is a glacier located 19 km away from Gangotri temple. Ganga River is the longest and most sacred river in the world. Gangotri Temple is dedicated to the Goddess Ganga. The original Gangotri Temple was built by the Nepalese general Amar Singh Thapa and later restored in the 19th century. The Gangotri Temple is a prominent Dham dedicated to Goddess Maa Ganga, which is visited by lakhs of devotees. The temple closes every year on Diwali day and reopens on Akshaya Tritiya. During this time the idol of the goddess is kept in Mukhaba village near Harsil. The rituals of the temple are looked after by the Semwal family of priests. These priests come from Mukhaba village.

Additionally, the Gangotri temple was built by the Gorkha General Amar Singh Thapa, in the 18th century and is situated on the left bank of the Bhagirathi river. It is nested amidst the beautiful surroundings of deodars and pine trees. It lies close to the holy rock or the Bhagirath Shila where King Bhagirath worshiped Lord Shiva. The Gangotri Temple opens for the Chardham Yatra on April 30th, 2025.

Gangotri Dham Opening & Closing Dates

Let us tell you that Gangotri Dham has not been open for a whole year. The temple offered the darshan for a specific period. The best time to visit the holy city of Gangotri is from April to June and September to November. Gangotri Temple is open from the last week of April to the second week of November. The Opening & Closing Date of the temple is given below;

Opening Date: The doors of the Gangotri Temple open for devotees on the auspicious occasion of Akshaya Tritiya. This year, the temple opened its gates (Kapat) on April 30, 2025.  To celebrate this occasion, a grand ceremony involving a sacred bath of the idol in the Bhagirathi River and a subsequent abhishek ritual ushers in the pilgrimage season.

Closing Date: As winter approaches, Gangotri is preparing to bid farewell to devotees. The closing date is usually a day or two after Diwali, which marks the end of the year’s pilgrimage season. In 2025, the temple doors are expected to close on October 22, 2025.
