Ahobilam Narasimha Swamy Temple is one of the prestigious Hindu shrines located in the Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh, Located on the Upper Ahobilam which is at a distance of 8 km from the lower one. The story goes back to when Hiranakashipu a demon king terrorized the world for a long time as he was granted a boon by Lord Brahma wherein he could not be killed by a man or beast either in day or at night and neither in the sky or on earth and not by a weapon.
His son Bhakta Prahlad was an ardent devotee of Lord Vishnu, Hiranyakashipu even tried to kill him several times but failed. Ahobilam is the same place where Shri Narasimha emerged from a pillar and killed Hiranyakashipu after a fierce battle. The Origin of Ahobilam according to mythological stories is when Lord Vishnu appeared to the Devas as half lion and half man as a Narasimha avatar the Devas shouted saying Ahobala (great strength) and Ahobila (cave) where the sanctum is located which is why it was named as Ahobilam.
