Kedarnath is one of the famous Hindu temples in India located in the Garhwal Region near the Mandakini River in the state of Uttarakhand. The Temple is not directly accessible by road and has to be reached by a 17-kilometer trek from Gaurikund. The Pandavas initially built the temple and is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas the holiest shrines of Shiva. It is one of the major sites in Uttarakhand’s Char Dham Yatra. The word ‘Kedarnath’ is derived from the words Kedara (field) and Nath (lord).
The construction of the Kedarnath temple goes way back to the times of Mahabharata wherein the Pandavas wanted to build a temple to wash their sins and to accomplish that they went in search of Shiva to seek his blessings to avoid them. Lord Shiva appeared in the form of a bull (Nandi) Bhim then caught hold of the bull by its tail and legs but the bull formed a Shiva and disappeared into the ground to later reappear in parts with the hump raising in Kedarnath. The arms appear in Tungnath, the face shows up at Rudranath, and the navel and stomach surface in Madhyamaheshwar, while the hair appears in Kalpeshwar. These five places are collectively known as Panch Kedar.
