Angkor Wat is a world-famous temple located in Cambodia. It is a Hindu-Buddhist temple complex spreading over the site, measuring 162.6 hectares (1,626,000 m2; 402 acres) within the ancient Khmer capital city of Angkor. The temple was originally constructed in 1150 CE as a Hindu shrine, which is dedicated to the deity Vishnu. Later, the temple was gradually transformed into the Buddhist Temple towards the end of the century.
As per the historical sources, Angkor Wat Temple was built in the early 12th century on the orders of the Khmer King Suryavarman II at Yasodharapura (present-day Angkor), the capital of the Khmer Empire, as his state temple and eventually mausoleum. The temple combines two basic plans of Khmer temple architecture; the first one is the temple mountain and the later-built galleried temple.
